野球界には数々の英雄がいる。だが、「ミスター」という称号が、ただ一人、長嶋茂雄のためにあるのはなぜか。彼は単に輝かしい記録を残した選手ではない。そのプレーは、野球というスポーツの枠を超え、一つの時代の象徴となり、人々を熱狂させた「国民的スター」だ。記録用紙には決して記されない、彼の魂を揺さぶる記憶こそが、彼が日本中から愛された理由である。これから語るのは、そんなミスターとファンが共に歩んだ、永遠に不滅の物語である。
運命の出会いと立教の至宝
長嶋氏の野球人生の原点は、千葉県佐倉市、あの印旛沼のほとりにある。戦後の物が豊かではない時代、彼の心には常に野球への抑えきれない渇望が燃え盛っていたという。少年が心を奪われたのは、意外にも阪神タイガースの藤村富美男氏の豪快なプレーだった。

母が手作りしたボールやグラブ、青竹を割ったバットで、彼は仲間と共に野球に明け暮れた。その貧しさの中で生まれた工夫と渇望こそが、後の「燃える男」の原動力となったのだ。
高校3年生の夏、南関東大会で放った、最初で最後の一本のホームランが彼の運命を切り開く。この鋭いライナーが野球関係者の目に留まり、プロへの扉が開かれかけたが、父の意向で立教大学へと進学する。この決断を導いたのは、恩師となる砂押邦信監督との出会いだった。プロという夢の舞台の鍵が、東京六大学野球という新たなステージにあることを、ミスターは強く予感していたのだろう。
立教大学での日々は、長嶋氏が選手として、人間として最も成長できた時間だった。砂押監督による、メジャーリーガーを参考にした「特別扱いの猛練習」が、ミスター独自のプレースタイルの礎を築いた。そして、同期の杉浦忠、本屋敷錦吾と共に「立教三羽烏」と呼ばれ、神宮の杜を沸かせた。東京六大学リーグの通算本塁打記録（8本）を更新した時の高揚感は、今でも鮮明に蘇ると語っている。
大学卒業時、本命は破格の条件を提示した南海ホークスとされていた。しかし、プロ入りを最終的に決めたのは、母からの「せめて在京の球団に」というたった一つの願いだった。ミスターは迷うことなく読売ジャイアンツへの入団を決意する。背番号「3」。川上哲治氏の温かい配慮を辞退し、彼は一桁の背番号へのこだわりから、偉大な先輩・千葉茂氏の番号を受け継ぐことを選んだ。ミスターの本当の野球人生が、この瞬間から始まろうとしていた。
伝説の幕開けとON砲の衝撃
ミスターのプロとしてのキャリアは、あまりにも劇的だった。1958/04/05、デビュー戦の後楽園球場。相手は国鉄スワローズの絶対的エース、金田正一氏。結果は、4打席連続三振。屈辱的な幕開けだった。しかし、ファンはその姿に熱狂した。惨敗の中にも、結果を恐れず、ただひたすらに全力でプレーする若者の純粋な情熱、すなわち「来た球は、どんな球でも打ちにいく」というミスターの野球哲学の原点を見たからだ。この敗北こそが、彼を「ファンを魅了するスター」とする出発点となったのである。
この年は、一塁ベースの踏み忘れによる幻の本塁打事件（新人としては史上唯一となるはずだったトリプルスリーを逃す）という若さゆえの過ちもあったが、本塁打王、打点王の二冠を獲得し、新人王に輝いた。そして、ミスターの野球人生を語る上で欠かせない男、王貞治氏との出会いがあった。この好対照な二つの個性がガチっと噛み合った時、球史に残る「ON砲」が誕生した。
ミスターの伝説が不動のものとなったのは、デビュー翌年の1959/06/25。プロ野球史上初となる、天皇皇后両陛下ご観戦の「天覧試合」だ。巨人対阪神。4対4の同点のまま迎えた9回裏、先頭打者はミスター。マウンドには終生のライバルとなる若きエース、村山実氏。カウント2ストライク2ボールからの5球目。ミスターは内角高めのボール球を強引に振り抜く。
打球は夜空を切り裂き、レフトスタンドへ。―― 劇的なサヨナラホームラン！球場は割れんばかりの大歓声に揺れた。この一打は、単なる勝利ではない。プロ野球を「国民的スポーツ」へと飛躍させる歴史的な転換点となったのである。この試合では、王貞治氏も本塁打を放っており、伝説の「ONアベック弾」が初めて記録された夜でもあった。この奇跡的な一打により、「長嶋茂雄」の名は、日本中の誰もが知る存在となり、彼は「ミスター・ジャイアンツ」と呼ばれた。
長嶋氏の隣には、常に王貞治氏がいた。二人は「ON砲」と称され、1965年から1973年にかけて、プロ野球史に燦然と輝く「V9」（9年連続日本一）という不滅の記録を打ち立てた。
舐めるたびに味が変わる。次は何が出てくるかわからない魅力がありました
王氏はミスターをそう評している。王氏が「計算できる強打者」だったのに対し、ミスターは「ド真ん中でもミスることがあるけど、クソボールをホームランにしちゃう」予測不能な天才だったのだ。
そして、王氏が最も驚いたのは、長嶋氏が常にファンを意識していたことだった。「どうすればお客さんに喜んでもらえるのか」を試合中に考えていると聞き、王氏は「凄いな、勝てないなと思いましたよ」と感嘆を口にしている。ミスターは守備も愛していた。「ファンと一体になれる守備が好きだった」と語り、三塁線の打球に飛びつき、華麗に捌くプレーでファンとの魂の交流を感じていた。その派手なプレーの裏には、ゴロの球筋を15種類に分類し練習を重ねたという、彼なりの美学と技術があったのだ。
永遠に不滅の別れ、そして監督としてのドラマ
栄光の時間に終わりが訪れた。1974/10/14、後楽園球場での引退セレモニー。ダブルヘッダーの第2試合を終え、マイクの前に立ったミスターから、あの魂のメッセージが放たれた。
我が巨人軍は永久に不滅です
この言葉は、彼の野球人生のすべてを捧げた球団への、魂からのメッセージとして、ファンの心に深く突き刺さった。スピーチの後、ミスターは球団の制止を振り切り、予定にはなかったグラウンド一周を始める。「ファンの皆様にも直接感謝を伝えたかった」からだ。涙で顔をくしゃくしゃにしながら、外野席のファン一人ひとりに別れを告げる背番号「3」。その姿は、彼がいかにファンを愛し、ファンから愛された存在であったかを何よりも雄弁に物語っていた。
引退の翌年、背番号「90」を背負い、監督就任。しかし、初年度の1975年は球団史上初の最下位という屈辱を味わった。勝利への執念から、「地獄の伊東キャンプ」と呼ばれる猛練習を課し、リーグ連覇を果たすも、日本一には届かず、1980年に無念の解任となった。12年の歳月を経て、背番号「33」で再び監督として復帰。彼は「もう一度、野球の素晴らしさ、その魅力を日本中に示したい」という一心だった。1994年には「国民的行事」と位置づけた「10.8決戦」を制し、監督として初の日本一に輝く。
圧巻は1996年のリーグ優勝。最大11.5ゲーム差をつけられながらの大逆転劇は、人々に「メークドラマ」と呼ばれた。彼の「最後まで諦めない心」が生んだ、まさに筋書きのないドラマだった。2000年、日本シリーズの舞台は、ミスターと盟友・王貞治氏（ダイエー監督）との「ON対決」という、宿命のクライマックスを迎える。ミスターはこのシーズン、現役時代の背番号「3」を再び身につけ、この決戦に臨んだ。シリーズは初戦、第2戦と連敗し、絶体絶命の窮地に立たされるが、彼のチームはそこから4連勝という劇的な逆転劇で、日本一の座を掴み取った。翌2001年の監督勇退会見。彼の人生観を問う問いに、ミスターは迷うことなくこう答えた。「野球というスポーツは人生そのものです」
永遠に不滅の「ミスター」
ユニフォームを脱いだ後も、ミスターの人生は野球と共にあった。アテネオリンピックを目指す日本代表監督という新たな夢を追い始めたが、2004年、脳梗塞で倒れ、右半身の麻痺という過酷な運命と闘うことになる。しかし、「再び公の場に立つ。ファンの皆様の前に立つ」という不屈の精神で、厳しいリハビリに耐え続けた。
そして、ファンが最も感動した瞬間の一つが訪れる。2013年5月5日、愛弟子・松井秀喜氏と共に国民栄誉賞を受賞。久しぶりに東京ドームのグラウンドに立った姿は、ファンとの絆の深さを改めて示した。さらに2021年の東京オリンピック開会式。王氏、松井氏と共に聖火リレーに参加するという、アテネで果たせなかった夢が形を変えて実現した。王氏から聖火を受け取り、松井氏に背中を支えられながら一歩一歩踏みしめたあの姿は、ミスターの野球人生が迎えた、最高のクライマックスとして人々の記憶に刻まれている。
彼の座右の銘は「快打洗心（良いバッティングは心を洗い清める）」。彼が追い求めた野球の本質は、ファンを熱狂させ、野球そのものに魂を注ぎ込むことだった。ミスターが叫んだ「我が巨人軍は永久に不滅です」という言葉。それは、球団への愛であると同時に、彼自身の野球への愛、そしてファンとの絆が、永久に不滅であることの誓いだった。だからこそ、彼は引退から半世紀近く経った今でも、色褪せることなく「ミスタープロ野球」として語り継がれ、永遠に愛され続けているのである。

In the world of baseball, many heroes rise and fall. But why does the title "Mr." belong exclusively to Shigeo Nagashima? He was more than just a player with brilliant stats; his play transcended the sport itself, becoming a symbol of an era and a "national star" who electrified the masses. The reason he is loved throughout Japan lies in the memories that stir the soul—moments never captured in a box score. This is the eternal story of "Mr." and the fans who walked beside him.
Destined Encounters and the Treasure of Rikkyo
Nagashima's baseball journey began on the banks of Lake Inba in Sakura, Chiba. In the post-war era of scarcity, his heart burned with an unquenchable thirst for baseball. Surprisingly, it was the flamboyant play of Fumio Fujimura of the Hanshin Tigers that captured his heart.

With balls and gloves handmade by his mother and bats crafted from split bamboo, he spent every waking hour playing. That resourcefulness and hunger born of poverty became the engine for the "Man on Fire" he would later become.
In the summer of his third year in high school, his first and last home run in the South Kanto Tournament paved the way for his future. This sharp line drive caught the eyes of scouts, but at his father's behest, he entered Rikkyo University. This path was guided by a meeting with his mentor, Coach Bunshin Sunayoshi. Nagashima likely sensed that the key to his professional dreams lay in the new stage of Tokyo Big6 Baseball.
His days at Rikkyo were when he grew most, both as a player and a man. Coach Sunayoshi's "specialized intense training," modeled after Major Leaguers, built the foundation for Nagashima's unique style. Alongside teammates Tadashi Sugiura and Kingo Motoyashiki, they were dubbed the "Rikkyo Trio," electrifying Meiji Jingu Stadium. He still recalls the exhilaration of breaking the Tokyo Big6 home run record with his 8th blast.
Upon graduation, the Nankai Hawks offered him an unprecedented deal. However, his final decision was swayed by his mother’s single wish: "At least stay with a team in Tokyo." Without hesitation, he joined the Yomiuri Giants. Choosing jersey number 3, he declined Tetsuharu Kawakami’s offer of a different number, opting to inherit the digits of the great Shigeru Chiba due to his insistence on a single-digit number. At that moment, his true baseball life was about to begin.
Legendary Beginnings and the ON Cannon Shock
Nagashima's professional career began with high drama. On 1958/04/05, at Korakuen Stadium, he faced the absolute ace of the Kokutetsu Swallows, Masaichi Kaneda. The result: four consecutive strikeouts. It was a humiliating start, yet the fans were ecstatic. Amidst the defeat, they saw a young man playing with pure passion, unafraid of results—embodying his philosophy: "If the ball comes, I'll swing at anything." This defeat was the true starting point for him as a star who captivated fans.
That year, despite a youthful mistake where he missed first base on a home run (costing him what would have been the only rookie Triple Three in history), he won the Rookie of the Year and topped the league in home runs and RBIs. Then came his encounter with Sadaharu Oh. When their contrasting personalities clicked, the legendary "ON Cannon" was born, etching itself into baseball history.
His legend became immovable on 1959/06/25, during the first-ever "Tenran Jiai" (game attended by the Emperor and Empress). In the bottom of the 9th with the score tied 4-4 against Hanshin, Nagashima stepped up. Facing his lifelong rival, the young ace Minoru Murayama, he aggressively swung at an inside-high ball on a 2-2 count. The ball cut through the night sky into the left-field stands—a dramatic walk-off home run!
The stadium shook with thunderous cheers. This hit was more than a victory; it was a historical turning point that elevated professional baseball to a "national sport." Sadaharu Oh also homered that night, marking the first "ON back-to-back" shots. This miracle hit made Shigeo Nagashima a household name across Japan, earning him the title "Mr. Giants."
Beside him was always Sadaharu Oh. Together as the "ON Cannon," they led the Giants to an immortal "V9" (nine consecutive championships) from 1965 to 1973.
The flavor changed every time you licked it. He had a charm where you never knew what would come next
Oh once said of Nagashima. While Oh was the "predictable powerhouse," Nagashima was the unpredictable genius who might miss a pitch right down the middle but hit a "garbage ball" for a home run.
Most surprising to Oh was how Nagashima always thought of the fans. Hearing that Nagashima pondered "How can I make the audience happy?" even during a game, Oh remarked in awe, "That's incredible. I knew I couldn't beat that." Nagashima loved fielding too, saying he felt a soul connection with fans when diving for balls at third base. Behind those flashy plays was a meticulous technique where he categorized ground ball trajectories into 15 types for practice.
An Eternal Farewell and Managerial Dramas
The era of glory eventually met its end. On 1974/10/14, at his retirement ceremony in Korakuen Stadium, Nagashima delivered a message from his soul:
My Yomiuri Giants are eternal and immortal
These words, a tribute to the team he gave his life to, pierced the hearts of fans. After the speech, he broke past team officials to walk a lap around the field—a move not in the schedule—because he "wanted to thank the fans directly." Seeing Number 3 bidding farewell through tears told the story of how much he loved and was loved by his fans.
The following year, wearing number 90, he became manager. However, 1975 saw the team's first-ever last-place finish. Driven by a will to win, he instituted the brutal "Ito Hell Camp" training, leading to league titles but failing to win the Japan Series, resulting in his dismissal in 1980. Twelve years later, he returned with number 33, driven by a desire to "show Japan the greatness and charm of baseball once more." In 1994, he won the "10.8 Showdown," which he dubbed a "national event," securing his first Japan Series title as manager.
The highlight was the 1996 league title. Overcoming an 11.5-game deficit, the comeback was dubbed "Make Drama" by the public. It was a scriptless drama born of his "never give up" spirit. In 2000, the Japan Series reached a fated climax: the "ON Showdown" against his old friend Sadaharu Oh (manager of the Daiei Hawks). Wearing his active-duty number 3, Nagashima’s team lost the first two games but rallied with four straight wins to claim the title. At his 2001 retirement press conference, he answered a question about his view on life without hesitation: "Baseball is life itself."
The Immortal "Mr."
Even after taking off the uniform, Nagashima’s life remained tied to baseball. He began a new dream as the Japan National Team manager for the Athens Olympics, but in 2004, a stroke left him with paralysis on his right side. Yet, with an indomitable spirit to "stand before the fans again," he endured grueling rehabilitation. One of the most moving moments came on May 5, 2013, when he received the People's Honor Award with his protégé, Hideki Matsui. Standing on the Tokyo Dome field again, he reaffirmed the deep bond with his fans.
In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, his dream from Athens was realized in a different form as he participated in the torch relay with Oh and Matsui. Taking the flame from Oh and walking step by step while supported by Matsui, that image remains etched in memory as the ultimate climax of his baseball life. His motto is "Kaida Senshin" (A good hit purifies the soul). The essence of the baseball he sought was to thrill fans and pour his soul into the game itself. When he shouted "The Giants are eternal and immortal," it was a vow of love for the team, for baseball, and for the fans. That is why, nearly half a century after his retirement, he remains the unfading "Mr. Pro Baseball," loved forever.
